Une is undoubtedly a very strong character. She has to be, otherwise she would never survive as a member of OZ. She has the ability to command others effectively and with authority and she has earned the respect of her comrades and subordinates. At crucial times, when levels of stress are high and one must make split-second decisions, she is able to remain in-control of her emotions and to make logical decisions. She also carries these huge responsibilities with great ease. When in her more peaceful state as Sainte Une, she uses her high intelligence to be an effective diplomat. And those examples are only the tip of the iceberg! But the greatest testimony of Une's strength, and what sets her apart from other GW characters, is that she pilots a Gundam. Until that point, only the 5 pilots, Treize, Zechs, and that soldier who went crazy (^_^;;) had flown a Gundam—notice that all of these characters are male.* In a shounen anime like GW, this is certainly a shining testimony of Une's strength! The events surrounding this feat are actually rather simple. Une was on Earth, in a coma, and Treize was in space, fighting a battle. Treize was about to die when Une appeared out of nowhere and saved his life. When I saw this episode, all I could say was "wow!" What a beautiful scene! Not only is it a testimony of Une's strength physically and mentally for being able to fly the Gundam, but also a testimony of her strength of heart! Where does Treize end and Une begin? No one will ever know... but this is the reason that Treize got to live for another episode or two. Because Une has an unexplainable connection to him; whether it's just because she loves him, or because they both care deeply for each other is debateable. But love is obviously at the heart of this situation, in so many more ways than just one.
