Two-Fold
-the story of une-

"That is the proof of my love for you."

Music

This page is about Une's image song Brightness and Darkness.  For starters, if you've never heard this song you will probably want to find a way to do that, because just knowing the words does not do justice to the power of this song.  Fortunately, I have found a video located on YouTube and here is the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JFI838jNfJI.

There is so much that can be said about this song, I'm not quite sure where to start. It is powerful, beautiful, stunning, and engaging; in essence, it's everything that a hardcore fan of Une like me could wish for in an image song. The lyrics reflect Une for who she is; the vocals are melt-in-your-mind delicious; the music itself is hard and crashing yet soft and timid. In my opinion, this song is as perfect as one could get to a musical interpretation of who Une is. The music itself, the lyrics, Sayuri's enchanting voice—all of it combines so perfectly.

The Lyrics
Firstly, a brief note on the translation of these lyrics.  There is a translation at animelyrics.com.  There used to be a translation on a GW fansite located on Tripod, but that site is no longer in existence.  And finally, there is also a translation that I came up with on my own, based on what I once knew about Japanese.  The translation below is a combination of these.

Tsumetaku to sasareta tooki sora no hate de
Setsunai kono ai wo towa ni shinjiru dake
Anata no negauri sono tameni nara
Subete wo kowashitemo
In love with you
Do anything for you

*Atsuku moeagaru ai koete
Yami ni hikisagareta kokoro ni ima
Chikau inochi kagayaku sekai
Sore ga anata e no ai no watashi

Shizuka ni nagaredasu namida kakushinagara
Kono ai dakishimete inori tsudzukeru toki
Kokoro ni ukabu sugata wa anata dake
Donnani tsurakutemo
In love with you
Do anything for you

**Sakebe! Mune ni himeta omoi wo
Yami wo kirisagu hodo hageshiku
Ima todoke! yume ni nemuru anata e
Towa ni kawaranai ai no watashi

Kanarazu yume wa kanau to shinjiteru
Inochi ga hateru made
In love with you
Do anything for you

*Repeat
**Repeat

At the end of the distant sky, cold-hearted and wounded,
I believe only in this painful love for eternity.
If it is for the sake of your dream,
I would destroy everything.
In love with you
Do anything for you

*Crossing, love hotly bursts into flames.
By the heart that was torn by darkness, now,
I swear by the living shining world:
That is the proof of my love for you.

While I'm hiding, two silent tears stream out.
I embrace this love in my arms and keep on praying for time.
Only the figure of your spirit comes to my mind.
Whatever the hardships,
In love with you
Do anything for you

**Cry out! Feelings of love that were kept to yourself;
Intensely, cut down the realm of darkness.
Now reach! For you, asleep in a dream,
My love is a constant for eternity.

I believe that dreams certainly come true.
Until the end of my life,
In love with you
Do anything for you.

*Repeat
**Repeat

Looking at the lyrics, it's pretty obvious what this song is about. Even if there may be mistakes in the translation, the general feel for the song is still right there. So it's no surprise to find lyrics like "If it is for the sake of your dream, I would destroy everything" or "Until my life ends, In love with you; Do anything for you." And how true that is! As I mentioned above, this song is a true reflection of who Une basically is: the woman in love with Treize Khushrenada. This song merely re-emphasizes the impact and effect that Treize has upon Une; sort of like reassuring us that, yes, she really did do everything for him out of love and devotion. The structure of the music really highlights all of these concepts, and it really does do the lyrics (and Une) justice. The Vocals

As I said earlier, the vocals of this song are melt-in-your-mind delicious. This song is sung by Sayuri, Une's voice actress, and I can't rant enough about how wonderful she is and how well she portrays Une through this song. She successfully captures the essence of Une; from the sweet, soft rendition of Lady Une to the more powerful and stronger voice of Colonel Une, this is such a beautiful piece of art!! Sayuri has a simply magnificent voice, and somehow she manages to capture the spirit of Une, making this 2-dimensional character seem even more real with every beat of the song.
